Provide your child with an abundance of positive sensory experiences to maximize capacity for learning & achievement!

Recommended by occupational therapists everywhere, the book “The Out of Sync Child”, by Carol Kranowitz gives a thorough presentation of SPD and is an excellent starting point for parents of children that are exhibiting difficult or unusual behaviors in young childhood.  Learn more about this disorder, how to diagnose it and what to do to get help by visiting www.espforspd.blogspot.com.

What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

Some children need more sensory help than others.  Sensory Processing Disorder, also known as Sensory Integration Dysfunction, is a condition that can prevent your child from learning at a normal pace, cause social difficulties, low self-esteem, & other problems throughout childhood and adulthood.

Experts and therapists that treat SPD report results using a technique involving a soft corn brush to help children regulate their sensory experiences.  The technique developed by Patricia  Wilbarger is called the Deep Pressure Protocol (DPPT).  If you already have determined that your child is displaying symptoms of SPD, consult your neurologist or occupational therapist to determine if the brushing technique would be appropriate and helpful for your child.  Benefits may include:

  • An improved ability to transition between various daily activities
  • An improvement in the ability to pay attention
  • A decreased fear and discomfort of being touched (tactile defensiveness)
  • An increase in the ability of the central nervous system to use information from the peripheral nervous system more effectively, resulting in enhanced movement coordination, functional communication, sensory modulation, and hence, self-regulation

It's important to learn the correct administration of this technique by consultation with a professional.
